Poetry supports the Reading Process for all
Learners
Gigi Morales David, University of North Florida Poetry is an invitation to people of all ages to actively engage in the reading process. Each individual reader and listener is encouraged to make personal connections with each poem. Previous experiences and individual interests play a significant role in terms of processing and comprehending poetry. Children are active participants as they interpret each poem. Poetry respects multiple perspectives and celebrates diversity. Poetry stimulates independent thinking. Children discover new meanings as they explore this form of expression. Poetry is a feast for the senses. Children are encouraged to think, feel and wonder. A new way of seeing emerges as children share their favorite poems. Reciting and performing poetry builds confidence and promotes a positive reading disposition in young children. Poetry engages the brain. Higher-level thinking skills develop as children read, recite, and create poetry. Vocabulary knowledge is extended as children learn about the specificity of word choice. Poetry requires attention to detail and powerful words that covey vivid imagery. Children deserve the opportunity to hear, read, recite, create, and perform poetry… After all, Words are a very special Tool!
